Tell the Illinois House of Representatives: Just let us fix our stuff

It's getting harder and more expensive for consumers to fix our products. We're calling on the Illinois Legislature to remove barriers to repair -- such as companies denying access to parts and service information to limit consumer repair choices.

It's getting harder and more expensive to get our electronics, like cell phones and computers, fixed. It's even a problem with farm and medical equipment. Many manufacturers have set up barriers that limit the ability of consumers and third-party repair shops to access the parts, service information, tools and diagnostic software they need to make repairs. Car manufacturers did the same thing until legislators stepped in to enable independent repair.

Repair restrictions limit customer choice and force us to pay such high prices for repair that it becomes cheaper to buy new stuff. Repair restrictions are bad for our pocketbooks and our local, sustainable companies because they shift money from a local repair economy to multi-state companies and overseas manufacturers.

We think there's a better solution for our broken gadgets: Right to Repair. That's why we're calling for protections that guarantee access to the components and information needed to fix the things we own. These commonsense reforms were vetted by the Federal Trade Commission and give every consumer, farmer, health system and small business access to the parts, tools and service information we need to repair products.

I urge you to vote yes on HB3061.
